Texture Tuesday – Lace

Texture Tuesday - Lace featuring a variety of fashionable textures.

Lace – not just for the Golden Girls anymore! Lace has become a classic trend that has made it’s mark on the fashion and home decor world. Lace can be seen everywhere recently and is a flirty way to spice up your wardrobe and home. We love lace for its ability to transform a look with sex appeal (without being scandalous!), yet provide femininity in classic, timeless pieces.  Lace has boomed in the home decor world – from lace cut outs on chairs to fabric wall coverings – giving traditional and modern household objects amazing texture.

"1940's Floral Bouquet and Brooch on Antique Lace" ring bearer pillow from our Tie-That-Knot! Bridal Collection

We love to put Victorian lace with a modern ribbon to mix up the entire look and feel of a pillow like the custom one below.  Lace never seems to go out of style and there’s always some new twist in the way people interpret it….that’s what makes it so versatile and fabulous!  And did we mention we love to collect it?  We once had a woman read an article about our studio and give us her grandmother’s entire collection of hand-tatted lace because she “trusted we would make good use of it…and make it into something pretty”.  One of the highest compliments we’ve ever received! Texture Tuesday – Fringe

Fringe is hot this season! - featuring one of Deborah Main's pillows

Fringe has been slowly making a comeback on the runways.  This summer and into the fall/winter seasons it will add a playful touch to your wardrobe and home. Fringe dates back to the roaring 1920′s when women wore necklaces and dresses with beaded fringe.  This year fringe has been seen on designer handbags and shoes…and more recently as decor accents in our homes. Hanging fringe from your ceiling in an open doorway, or to partition a dining area off of a main room, can add mysterious drama to your home while also being a tad flirty. Fringe bangs have also been popular for a few years now and can add depth to your hair.  Whether its on a pillow, shoes, hair or handbag, be sure you don’t go overboard, as one accent piece with fringe can go a long way!  XO PG

This pillow is a throwback to the 1920's! But we put a modern spin on it by stitching this fun and flirty vintage French trim. From our Rococo Ribbon Collection.

These pillows can be found at our website here.  As holiday gift markets draw near, we’ll be adding more fringe pillows to our collections cause they’re SO fun to make! Contact our studio for custom orders anytime at info@deborahmaindesigns.com!

Texture Tuesday – Metallic

Metallics are trending this week - featuring two Deborah Main pillows

Disco balls and shiny pants are not a thing of the past anymore.  Metallics continue to be a hot season’s must-have trend. From sparkly earrings all the way down to high heeled shoes, you will find metallics all over fashionistas everywhere. Adding a touch of gold or silver to your wardrobe and home will add a classic, yet futuristic feel. Try not to weigh yourself down with too many accessories though, only a few key items will make the statement you are looking for. Style your nails with some cool metallic nail polish or glitter, and while you’re at it, add a metallic-patterned wallpaper or lamp shade cover and leave that designer cutting-edge impression on visitors to your home. Just be sure that nail polish is dry before you plunge into your wallpapering adventure! XO PG

Bohemian trends featuring a Deborah Main pillow and Milli Starr hair accessories

Peasant shirts and long, flowy skirts are not a thing of the past anymore.  Bohemian styles have started trending once again, so rummage through your mother’s closet and dig up her old hippie styled clothing. This style has been rocking the runways for multiple seasons now and has made a fierce comeback since it originated in the late 60′s and early 70′s. Local hat designer, Milli Starr, has perfected the bohemian look with her new collection of headbands and accessories (as featured above). Her designs and collections can be viewed and purchased here. One thing to keep in mind is the carefree and laid back attitude that this style brings to light. Pretty florals and wild paisley prints are only the start of this rockin’ trend. So put some flowers in your hair while you’re getting dressed and head to the nearest vintage shop to add a little bohemian spice to your life! XO PG

Texture Tuesday: Color Blocking

Spring Trend: Color Blocking

The hottest 2012 spring trend is undoubtedly color blocking. Flip through any magazine and you’ll be sure to find color blocking on the runways and on the hottest celebrities. Color blocking is about pairing bold, unexpected hues to create a refreshing pop of color. It’s time to pull out your favorite, brightly colored pieces and start mixing them. There are no limits of combinations you can create in your closet or in your home. You call pull the hottest trends right off the runways and incorporate them into your home decor. Like this over sized vintage “Lourenti” scarf pillow (found at Aviary Lounge and on the Deborah Main Web site) can be great on the backdrop of a modern  bed or leather couch.

Oversized Vintage Silk "Lourenti" Scarf

We were also so honored and excited to be featured in the first issue of Austin American-Statesman’s REAL ““Authentic Austin Living” magazine that debuted on March 30. According to the Association of Magazine Media, the number of magazines in North America has been climbing, growing from 17,694 in 2001 to 20,707 in 2010 so the Austin American-Stateman is confident REAL will be successful. According to the site, “the publication — which will replace the Statesman-produced magazine Glossy — will touch on fashion, home design, health and fitness, neighborhoods, food, family, pets, events and more. The goal in launching REAL was to be able to offer broader content and reach a larger portion of the Austin American-Statesman audience.” Four of our pillows were lucky to be featured (along with some other select local pillow designers such as Stone Textile, Square Feathers and Kayci Wheatley, which is also available at Aviary) in the issue. You can view several of our pillows here.

“Inside The Design Studio” with artist Roi James

Lytle Presley Contemporary, 1214 W 6th St. Austin TX 78703 | hours: Monday-Friday 9-5, Saturday by appointment. 512-469-6010

“Inside The Design Studio” with Roi James

Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM (CT)

Austin, TX

As we mentioned in our guest blog for D. Coop, we get inspiration from everywhere!!  Lately, the past couple months, we’ve been getting that directly from this amazing Designer series sponsored by Lytle Pressley Contemporary.

Pressley’s latest venture offers contemporary furnishings and art for today’s aesthetically attuned and value-conscious customers and designers.  The series features in depth conversations with some of the most intriguing design luminaries working today. Dick Clark and Larry Speck were the first two guests and artist Roi James is today, Thursday, March 22nd.

Artist Roi James, in front of one of his large abstract oils

Roi James’s paintings of conceptual constructions, meditative abstracts , transcendent landscapes, and mystical figure portraits all acknowledge him to be a painter who is continually exploring and refining his technique.” says Lytle Pressley.

I actually can speak from personal experience with Roi, as my husband and I own several of his earlier works, a gift bestowed to us by my late mother.  I’ve heard Roi speak and I’ve watched him grow from a classic renaissance man into this amazing prolific contemporary artist.  He can do almost anything with oil and his work has a magical quality to it with layers of intriguing depth!!  He’s also a wonderful generous person! And if you go around Austin, in peoples homes and galleries all over the country, you will see a wide range of his stunning work from portraiture to modern.

More on Roi in his profile below (or rather, come hear him speak tonight at 6:30!), but first let’s see some photos of the first two guests.

The first one was award-winning architect, Dick Clark, a wonderfully charismatic, down-to-earth, old Austinite.  His firm has built some fantastic structures, both residential and commercial all over Austin from gorgeous modern homes in the hill country to restaurants and downtown lofts.  He’s also been a mentor to many young architects that are now thriving on their own. You must also check out the philanthropic work he’s been doing in Kenya.

Once I heard Dick speak I vowed I would attend EVERY one of these designer talks as they have been truly inspirational.  They are not just about architecture or art, these impressive Austin figures touch on life, what inspires them, what has meant most to them in their career.  I’ve learned so much I can’t even begin to describe how fascinating this new series is.  It is a “must-see” in Austin, so be sure to get your name on the guest list.

Architect Dick Clark and Lytle Pressley

The set up: Lytle Pressley asks unrehearsed questions to featured guest. Great format!!

A wonderful large capacity room for large audience surrounded by paintings from many different artists.

Lytle’s far more articulate than I on his brainchild, so I’ll share his words:

“Inside The Design Studio” hosts revered talents in several design disciplines for an intimate and—at times irreverent—interview by founder Lytle Pressley. The format is cocktails by Dripping Springs Vodka and conversation including an overview of their portfolio, audience questions and answers, and opportunities to mingle. Culture Map Austin is the Digital Media sponsor.

The elegant, 7,000 square foot space on West 6th street hosts high design and high value contemporary furnishings and rotating exhibitions from mid-career artists such as Roi James,  Gina Brezini, and Court Lurie. “Inside The Design Studio” examines the genesis of design, the impulse behind design, and the inspiration of today’s luminaries of architecture, landscape design, furniture/product design, fine art, interior design, and graphic design.

A magnificent oversized contemporary light!

Each event has had a waiting list to attend!

The second guest architect, Larry Speck , was another award-winning architect, one who’s been teaching at U.T. for years and was the chairman of the renowned U.T. School of Architecture as well.  He has built many of Austin’s public spaces, and one we all widely use (unless you’re afraid of flying!); Austin-Bergstrom International Airport . I’m not only distracted by the Salt Lick and Amy’s icecream, but I now can no longer walk through that airport without noticing every detail on the walls, the columns, ceilings and more….all because I learned more about Larry at this fantastic in-depth discussion series.

Lytle Pressley with 2nd featured guest speaker, architect Larry Speck

These guest series are not intended for the guest to lecture or pontificate on all their great works.  Instead, Lytles questions are very provocative, pulling out layers of rich, deep thought, and spontaneous responses and laughter from the audience.  It’s a very relaxed setting. They first show slides of the featured guests’ life from childhood, through teenage and college years, to adulthood.  It gives the audience a wonderful inside perspective on the guest as a person.  And then, once you hear them speak, prompted by Lytles thought-provoking questions, it is hard to come away not truly inspired, ready to go home and create your own masterpiece or work of art.

So stop by tonight and hear Roi James and be sure to stay tuned for more fabulous guests at this wonderful “Inside The Design Studio” series at Lytle Pressley.  This series is educational, enlightening and truly inspiring.  Thank you Lytle for enriching all our lives with these amazing design talents in Austin!!  See you tonight!  XOPG

Attendees Charlotte Plemmons Warren, Catherine Gerber, and Interior Designer Jak Kesterson

More About Roi James.  Come see him tonight at 6:30!

The diversity of Roi James styles and the fluency in which he paints reveal that innate ability often described as a gift, but which is truly the result of a deep conviction and dedication towards his creative expression. Having successfully developed mature bodies of work in the figurative, landscape, and abstract schools, in his latest work, James begins the integration of his compartmentalized styles to produce a singular and unified voice. In this new series entitled “Dialogues”, a personal and mystical language emerges which speaks to the many layers and complexity which comprise our being. Paintings no longer reveal just surface but expose the mystical currents which surround, penetrate, and flow through that surface. Each painting is broken into multiple panel arrangements which engage each other in dialogues creating a dance between; the traditional and the modern, formalism and contemporary, and representational and abstraction. In these works, he produces images in which the viewer can experience both a sense of the familiar and the unfamiliar at the same time. There is a mysterious quality to the images. What are they? How were they made? The mind wants to identify them so that they can be placed into the world of the known. Yet the images defy a complete recognition leaving the viewer to rest in the uncertainty and mysteriousness of what it is that they are observing. It’s that mystery that gives the work it’s strength and power.
