Purple Pillow Power with Deborah Main Designs

Purple Group, Brooches, Deborah Main Designs, decorative pillows, design, fashion, vintage, textiles, jewelry, luxury, Luxury pillows, The Pillow Goddess

With all the royal attention across the pond, Deborah Main Designs has decided to luxuriate in the color purple this week. All shades of it in fact….from dusty gray lavender to deep violet! Since ancient times when emperors wore this brilliant shade, purple has been associated with nobility and piety. Now, you can bring home a little share of your own royal décor!

Two of our gorgeous prints from the UnZipped Collection, pictured above, dazzle and entertain, with a long suede tassel you can zip and unzip to your hearts content, letting the distinctive colors hidden behind the zipper peek out. It’s quite the tease!!

Any of this romantic color series can be found in the bright and shiny, remodeled Austin, Texas showroom of Interior Design Gallery. No other store carries such an extensive collection of our handmade pillows! They also consistently carry modern, traditional and transitional furnishings like Lorts, Lexington, Julian Chichester, Noir, Emberson Et Cie, Hancock, Heckman and pretty much the rest of the alphabet.  If you haven’t seen this delightful showroom, do feel free to stop by and check out this North Central Austin gem.

Deborah Main Designs Spices Up Your Summer

Red group, Brooches, Deborah Main Designs, decorative pillows, design, fashion, vintage, textiles, jewelry, luxury, Luxury pillows, The Pillow Goddess

Reds lovely enough to brighten any room!

Here at Deborah Main Designs, to escape the heat, we just got back from a family vacation by staying at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio (more on historic hotels this fall!), lounging by their pool, and eating lots of ice cream…and what a divine meal atop the Tower of the Americas.  But with all this heat we keep talking about (and in Texas it sticks around until the end of September!), we think it’s about time to spice things up a bit! What better way then to add some warmth to your summer home than with a punch of color? We prefer something from this color story of orange and red pillows to add a clean, vibrant edge to any décor.

Orange Group, Brooches, Deborah Main Designs, decorative pillows, design, fashion, vintage, textiles, jewelry, luxury, Luxury pillows, The Pillow Goddess

Orange and green, with punches of black and white, can bring warmth to a lovely neutral sofa.

In this family of colors, both red and orange, have long been associated with activity and the unconventional. As you can see, they really do convey action in this newly renovated  showroom, the Interior Design Gallery in Austin, Texas, where we brought bright energy and vigor to their beautiful furnishings with this color story.  With irregular spots on the rectangle  Pop Art pillow made from a 1960′s patio dress, and lively stripes on the square pillow, this duo of orange pillows rivals the brilliantly unusual portrait of a vintage car in the background! (Both the couch and painting are available at Interior Design Gallery).

If you aren’t feeling the fire of our summer red and orange series, don’t fret! We have an amazing off white & tan series that can help you conquer the neutral tones of a balmy beach house.

This color story works separately or together. With huge spots and energetic waves,  and a linen pillow featuring our vintage French trim, these guys will match any decor.

We are very excited to be featured in Interior Design Gallery’s newly remodeled showroom and cannot encourage you enough to stop in and check out some of the fabulous accessories and furniture they carry.  This is the only showroom in town too that you can see all of our collections under one roof! Now how about that?

tangroup silly

When I saw how much that pillow’s top wave looked like a man with a mustache, I just could not resist!

So how about it? I MUST ask you a question: What colors have you used this summer to liven up your home or summer cottage? We would love to hear from you, so please let us know what you’ve been up to with your summer decor.

And take time out today from your busy schedule to catch me and two other savvy  business owners on FashionMingle.net’s new Retail Success: Buying the Best Series.  Whether your designs are red hot or cool blue, Deborah Main Designs has got you covered.  This live panel will provide tips on connecting with buyers and approaching boutiques with your designs.  Until next week, XO PG.

Bold colors truly inspire me!  And there is no fresher, cleaner color than blue – the color of the sky and oceans.  I always dreamed of wearing a ring like my mother filled with blue sapphires and diamonds. But I think this summer, considering the heat et al, I’ll dream of lying on a sail boat in the middle of the ocean surrounded by multiple shades of blue like the pillow below.

Blue can be calming and tranquil, but at the same time blues can be brilliant and bold,  like ocean waves crashing to the shore.   Take a look at this neutral rustic settee (above) and look what happens when you add wild pops of color!  (I bet you your mood has brightened!)

In fact, according to Austin painter Leanne Venier, a renowned artist, scientist & color therapy expert, color has a lot to do with how we feel every day of our lives. She lectures around the country on the healing effects of color, light & art.  To learn more, please watch her enlightening videos. And really think about adding some color into your life!

Summer Travel with Deborah Main Designs

Grab a towel and get poolside with Deborah Main!

Deborah Main Designs featuring her Timeless Travels Collection!

Centered in Austin, Texas, Deborah Main, founder of Deborah Main Designs, sure knows how to beat the summer heat by taking a trip or two….or hitting the pool! Whether it’s cross country up to the cool coast of Maine, or just around the corner to the market for ice cream, everyone should travel and take a mini vacation this time of year. Especially since it’s been 104 degrees in Austin!

When escaping the scorching heat, we travel and see as many new places as possible. While there, we scour vintage shops and pick up some of the most amazing things to remember our trips by.  Now, some of these nostalgic mementos are available for everyone to see with our Timeless Travels Collection, bringing a fabulous vacation destination to your home and adding a touch of the whimsical or exotic to any room.

pillow_01 copyOur Timeless Travels Collection is a lighthearted series created with inspiration from the unique 1940′s and ’50′s souvenir scarves, shams and handkerchiefs (unused of course!) from cities, states and countries all across the world. For those of you wise enough to remember, road trips were five kids packed into a flip-up trunk seat, facing backwards, in a long wood-paneled station wagon. Now we just hop on a jet and we’re in Paris in six hours!! We’ve been collecting these original vintage souvenirs (not reproductions) for years and you’ll see why, as they pop with color and beg for a coastal summer home or your favorite cozy chair. And they’re just plain FUN!!!!

Delicate scarves from abroad -  think Paris – give this scarf series a glossy finish and a silky texture that invites you to run your hands across fabric depicting landscapes found only across oceans.

Backed in stripes, polka dots, or checks, we’ve collected states from coast to coast and think they make adorable gifts!!!

Deborah Main Designs has gone to Atlanta!

Deborah Main Designs, decorative pillows, design, fashion, vintage, textiles, jewelry, luxury, Luxury pillows, The Pillow Goddess

Some of the brooches I am taking to Atlanta! A beautiful heirloom brooch from the Main family was the inspiration for my work.

Finally on the way to Atlanta! We are off to AmericasMart, the trade show where I showcase my collections of handmade, custom luxury pillows as objets d’art. It has been a tough few weeks, but I am so ready to go! My collections have been carefully bundled up and sent on ahead. They are waiting for me in Atlanta.

I have been counting down the days until I leave. Believe me, the pressure has really been on my team to make a flawless appearance in Atlanta for Deborah Main Designs. Between the frenzied designing and frantic completion of every type of form I can think of, the days have been flying by. I have been blessed to have people to lean on. My PR people have done a wonderful job preparing for the elegant champagne and chocolate meet and greet event I have planned for the first evening.

Once again, my booth is on the High Design wall, but I have made a few changes since the January show. This time we will be going for elegance and simplicity. Instead of a back wall solid with tall shelves, I will have glass cases showcasing my jewels, and a few shelves where I will be debuting a brand new product! I don’t want to ruin the surprise, so keep your eyes peeled for the new line next week in pictures.

I have big plans for the trade show, but not just for my brand. I can’t wait to see the other booths and all of the wonderful people who made January’s show such a special occasion for me. In particular, I hope to see Kathy Ireland there. In January, she kindly stopped by my booth and was so encouraging of my work. Kathy Ireland is a gorgeous lady, a model turned businesswoman, who owns her own marketing empire. Since meeting her, she has been my inspiration to keep reaching for the stars!

Stay tuned for updates and as many pictures as I can post!

Deborah Main Designs Showcases Austin Fashion Awards

Deborah Main Designs, decorative pillows, design, fashion, vintage, textiles, jewelry, luxury, Luxury pillows, The Pillow Goddess

The 5th Annual Austin Fashion Awards wrapped up a very exciting Austin Fashion Week in May this year (not during the heat of the summer in August, thank you!). The Saturday night awards held adventures for all comers, where we watched four of our favorite Austin designers debut new collections on the dual runways that framed the main stage. Down these runways paraded fantastic garments that tickled the imagination. (And by the way, what a wonderful stage set up this year….we loved the dual runway!)

Deborah Main Designs was well represented at the event by myself, intern Brandi Moore, and the new award-winning young designer, Qin Latimer (who just happens to be my amazing daughter!).  We were joined by many friends dressed to the nines for a night of fashion frenzy!

Part I: With pulsing music, the evening started with a festive runway presentation of all the mash up teams, a feat in itself, as there were so many wonderful teams this year.  Mixing designers with make up artists, hair stylists and photographers and more, this has been one of the fun features of Austin Fashion Week that many look forward to.  Eon won Critics Choice: Best Mash up Team with their striking red dress and hair photographed by Gerry Hanan out in white sands.  And the award for People’s Choice: Best Team Mash-Up went to Vintage Deity, the heavenly Britany Walker photographed by Gregg Cestaro. Congratulations to both teams for stellar creative work!  We are so proud that our very own photographer, Gregg Cestaro, won again for his amazing artistry.!!Deborah Main Designs, decorative pillows, design, fashion, vintage, textiles, jewelry, luxury, Luxury pillows, The Pillow Goddess

And let us not forget the main stage itself which was illuminated by a beautiful crystal chandelier under the canopy of a pair of striking white arches which helped make the show so beautiful to watch.  Emcee, Sandy McIlree, from Mix 94.7’s JB and Sandy show, hosted the awards for the second year running. Here are all the winners that accepted the famous “Golden Boot”.  We know you’ve worked hard and we at Deborah Main Designs want to wish each of you the best and congratulations!!  (Keep reading below and see all the fabulous designs coming out of Austin, Texas!)

Part II: Now onto the four main fashion designers.  We loved how Austin Fashion Week staged the event with two designers, then boot winners, then two more designers. Plus the twin stages and timing were fantastic.  But what we really swooned over were the clothes and jewelry!!  Just between four local designers, it is astounding the breadth of range in color, style, fabric selection, and other materials these amazing designers utilized.  You know how we love fabric!! Amidst poetic and fire swallowing openings, each designer told a story with their clothing and jewelry and AMAZING headpieces! Wow, we’ve never seen such gorgeous headpieces!! There were so many details that we loved – from embroidered appliques and incredible texture to feather and horn adornments – it was a feast to behold!!

What you may not know about Deborah Main Designs, is that FASHION is our #1 source of inspiration!!  And each of these designers inspired us to no end.  However, there is one special one that we have an affinity for.  It might be because he chooses colors that we love. Perhaps it is because he incorporates feathers and fur.  We don’t know exactly why we love Stephen Macmillan Moser so much, except that at his show last year he said “I let the fabrics speak to me”, and we relate to that.  So take a peek at all these fabulous Austin, Texas designers (all whose work is in high demand internationally!!) and see what inspires you. Please read all the way to the end, because it was the finale of Austin Fashion Awards that summed up this most fantastic 5th awards evening with the final Trailblazer Award, given by Gail Chovan, to Stephen MacMillan Moser.

Boudoir Queen

Everything vintage was well represented in the Boudoir Queen collection, by Dawn Younger-Smith. Every piece was a wonder, full of embellishments, layers upon layers, all created with her well-known eye for detail. We particularly loved the rich colors and beautiful embroidery on many of her pieces.

Jewels were highly celebrated in all forms and fashion upon Kendra Scott’s models – from bangles up and down the arms to long strands of colorful jewels down past the waist. We particularly liked the armored shoulders below with feathers shooting toward the stars which captured the brilliance of coloring throughout Kendra’s designs.

  Gail Chovan

We had a wonderful surprise from Gail Chovan who incorporated light into the darkness of the black designs for which she is well known.   Gail is a master at layering and draping…..and this detail shined throughout her collection! The sophistication of her unique designs is contrasted with the simplicity of her barefoot models – a no-fuss look that speaks truly to the core of her style.

Stephen MacMillan Moser

Last, but certainly not least, Stephen Macmillan Moser wowed us with the finale: a dramatic enactment of a Pagan Wedding. His show was an incredibly moving vision, dedicated to the love and loss of friend and photographer, Seabrook Jones. Spectacular headpieces by Jennifer Ayers were worn by every model which, to me, elevated the models and their spectacular gowns to the status of Celtic goddesses.  With men, equally adorned with Stephen’s signature use of cut velvet fabrics and fur, we could not help but watch in awe. From color and texture to over-the-top extravagance, and the entire story line….well, Stephen’s finale just took our breath away.  You could have heard a pin drop in the audience. We were mesmerized, entranced…it was magical and evocative.  Stephen did a show last year, but this year he truly gave all of Austin his masterpiece!!! Thank you Stephen!

Designer Gail Chovan presenting the Trailblazer award to fashion columnist and designer, Stephen MacMillan Moser.

What a phenomenal show the Austin Fashion Awards were….we absolutely loved it!!  The finale was topped with a most poignant finish with Gail Chovan awarding Stephen Moser the Trailblazer award. For me, her speech finished the intriguing story of their love affair and sheer respect for each other as human beings (with differing opinions!) and brilliant fashion designers. It was charming, funny, and loving all at the same time….a magical evening that I will never forget!

Fashion Week may be over, but school just got out and it’s summer here in Austin, Texas. So enjoy all the sunshine, and spruce up your style with some Austin fashion.  We at Deborah Main Designs wish you the most wonderful summer ever!   XO PG

Texture Tuesday – Houndstooth

Texture Tuesday featuring: houndstooth trends and one of our Limited Edition pillows

Houndstooth has been around the block once or twice, but recently it has come out to play in dramatic ways. Throughout several decades the trend has been reinvented and modernized to include a substitution of different colors, worn on a number of different pieces of clothing, and even as a nail design. And once high end designers like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Emporio Armani, and Moschino started to use the trend in their collections in the 1990s; it became highly popularized and worn by Hollywood celebrities. It’s common in tweed and wool fabrics, making it the perfect pea coat or
blazer. This checkered print is classy and chic with a touch of mystery.

Stop by Feathers Boutique and Moss on South Lamar. We saw amazing houndstooth trends at both of these shops!

Texture Tuesday – Yellow & Gray

Texture Tuesday featuring: yellow & gray trends and one of our Limited Edition pillows

Our latest obsession: yellow and gray! This trend has stuck around in the fashion and home decor world for a couple years now, yet continues to be fresh. Nothing goes better with gray, in our minds, than yellow. Adding a bright color with a dull neutral creates a beautiful color palette that looks good on all aspects of design. We cannot resist a yellow and gray pattern on anything! It looks classically chic on items around the home, yet looks exquisitely elegant on the runways. Mixing this trend with cream and black can also add some vintage spunk to the palette. So think bright and lively as you shop around for yellow and gray this season. XO PG

Texture Tuesday – Coral

Texture Tuesday featuring: coral trends and one of our VIP pillows

One of this season’s biggest trends is the color coral. Nothing lifts us out of our why-isn’t-it-hot-yet blues more than wearing a pop of color. This summer, it’s all about integrating hints of redish, pinky corals into our wardrobe. Coral is everywhere and we cannot get enough of it.  We’ve bought coral earrings, shoes and dresses because we’re just loving this color oh-so-much!!  It’s really showing up in homes too and looks great paired with hints of gold.  Painting one of the rooms in your house coral can bring a smile to anyone’s face who sees it. From the runways to the department stores, along with color-blocking, bright coral is without a doubt a big trend this season.  And it’s really no surprise, not only is this color eye-catching and bright, but it’s also girly and fresh….perfect for spring and summer outings. Celebrities have been wearing it everywhere from the red carpet to the grocery store.  Give it a try – you too can pull of this great trend with style! XO PG
